Things You Oughta Know About Lainey Wilson

There’s a long list of things you oughta know about Lainey Wilson, but Stars and Guitars has you covered. We caught up with country music’s new woman to watch recently after her special Song Suffragettes performance for C2C at The Listening Room.

Her most recent single, “Things A Man Oughta Know,” hit country radio in August. Coming from a rural farming town in Baskin, Louisiana, Wilson brings her sweet-sounding southern drawl and grit to country music. Known for her signature “bell bottom country” style, Wilson has opened for notable names like Justin Moore, Ashley McBryde, Randy Houser, Josh Turner and Morgan Wallen just to name a few.

When she was nine years old, her parents took her to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. She begged her dad to take her to the Grand Ole Opry on the way home— and that’s when she knew Nashville was calling her name. After spending five years as a Hannah Montana impersonator at fairs, festivals and birthday parties, she “hung the wig up and finally decided to do this thing for real.”

She knows a few things a man oughta know firsthand: when she first made the move to Nashville, she lived in a camper trailer for three years.

“I can hook a trailer on a two-inch hitch
I can shoot a shotgun, I can catch a fish
I can change a tire on the side of a road.”

The young girl that once dreamed of stepping into the Opry circle amongst her country music heroes took the stage herself this year on Valentines Day. Wilson remembers thinking, “alright I’ve made it here, I’m on the right track.”

On the right track she is. Since moving to Music City, Wilson has become involved with the weekly all-women artist showcase at The Listening Room, The Song Suffragettes, and has garnered attention as an established singer, songwriter from some of Music City’s finest.

Although Wilson has a long list of people she’d love to share a stage with, Dolly Parton is at the top of her list. It’s no surprise that the “WWDD,” (What Would Dolly Do) singer dreams of a duet with the leading lady of country music. Her sound, similar to the sweet southern drawl from Dolly herself, makes us hope for a collaboration between the two somewhere down the line.

This past year has been a big one for Wilson but she has even more in store for 2021. After releasing an EP last fall and four additional songs in 2020, her new releases will waterfall into a full project early next year.
