Lainey’s Wilson’s Ex Boyfriends Think ‘Watermelon Moonshine’ Is About Them

Lainey Wilson isn’t one to voice it, so we’ll do it for her: her ex-boyfriends should move on!

The singer of “Watermelon Moonshine” has been fielding all sorts of calls, DMs, and the like about her latest No. 1 hit. Fans adore how it evokes memories of a first love and a sunset filled with kisses, hugs, and more. This nostalgic country ballad brings to mind Deana Carter’s “Strawberry Wine.” While not identical, it carries the same personal touch.

Perhaps, a touch too personal.

“Every guy I’ve ever dated in my life thinks this song is about them,” Wilson shares with Taste of Country Nights. “‘No! Don’t you realize I dated other people besides you!'”

Josh Kear and Jordan Schmidt collaborated with Wilson on “Watermelon Moonshine,” featured on her Bell Bottom Country album. She tells Evan Paul that even guys she only spent a month or two with are convinced she’s singing about them.

“I’m like, ‘Well, if that strokes your ego, if that makes you feel special, you’re right. I wrote it about you.'”

Up to this point, Wilson hasn’t disclosed who, if anyone, directly inspired the lyrics of “Watermelon Moonshine.” Despite going public with her relationship with Hodges, she’s been rather tight-lipped about her romantic life, recognizing that the focus should remain solely on the music.

This approach has paid off: her nomination in the Entertainer of the Year category at the 2023 CMAs was a first for her, and it felt incredibly validating, if not a tad surprising. Paul, the host of ToC Nights, inquired about her celebration plans if she wins.

“I’m going to go a little wild,” she says, seemingly amazed to even be contemplating such things.
