We have a band name change coming out of Nashville this Thursday morning. Lady A has announced on their social media that they are dropping Antebellum from their name and are officially going by Lady A moving forward. The statement reads in part “after much personal reflection, band discussion, prayer and many honest conversations with some of our closest Black friends and colleagues, we have decided to drop the word ‘antebellum’ from our name and move forward as Lady A, the nickname our fans gave us from almost the start.” The reason for the name change, as explained by the band, is that the word antebellum can be associated with a time period before the Civil War when slavery was commonplace.
They apologized for the pain that it has caused some fans and strived to do better in the future. The group also announced that they will be making a donation to the Equal Justice Initiative through LadyAID, the philanthropic effort that they founded to help impoverished and sick children. The change has already been made official on Twitter on both their name and Twitter handle. They have not changed their Facebook or Instagram yet, but I presume that will happen in the coming days. The announcement has caused them to become a trending topic on Twitter and has divided fans in the comments section of their social media posts. Some are praising their decision, while others are accusing them of bowing to social pressures and vowing to no longer listen to their music. Do you approve of Lady A’s name change?
