Wednesday’s Presidential Inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will have a country element. Garth Brooks has joined Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga in the list of performers announced for the swearing-in ceremony. The ceremony will take place on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol, though only members of Congress are permitted to attend in-person, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Brooks stated in Zoom call when announcing the performance, that he will not be performing ‘We Shall Be Free’, because he performed the song at Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony. He did not state what song(s) he will be performing. Aside from Obama, Brooks has also performed for every president since Jimmy Carter, with the exception of Ronald Reagan. He disclosed that he was asked to play Donald Trump’s inauguration, but had to decline because he had a conflicting tour date.
A spokesperson for the Inauguration Entertainment Committee emphasized that all three performers “reflect a theme of unity” with Brooks also stating this was not a statement of politics, but one of unity.
The swearing-in ceremony will broadcast along many networks and streaming services beginning at 11:30 a.m. EST, starting with the singing of the National Anthem by Lady Gaga. To find all the information you need to know regarding the ceremony, please refer to Washington, DC’s official website.
