In preparation for her upcoming EP ‘29’, Carly Pearce released a new song off that collection on Friday titled ‘Should’ve Known Better’. If her previous album was all about her seemingly happy marriage to Michael Ray, it seems that this new EP will be about her divorce. The new song places blame on both parties for why the relationship fell apart.
She starts by singing about how she watched her parents struggle in their marriage and that should’ve been an indication about how it takes dedication to make a relationship work. She then details how Ray showed her the “fantasy” of who he is and that he ultimately tried to make her the scapegoat for his actions.
More often than not, you hear songs about the demise of a relationship that are very one-sided. What is refreshing about ‘Should’ve Known Better’ is that Pearce holds both parties accountable, though I’m sure not equally. Pearce’s classic crooning style works very well to demonstrate the pain of divorce and the realization that not just one person is to blame. Every song she records feels authentic and shows that she truly feels everything she sings. ‘Should’ve Known Better’ is no different.
