Ashley Cooke, a recent graduate of Nashville’s Belmont University, has released a lyric video for her new single “Jealous of the Sky” and you won’t be disappointed. Cooke has seen major success already with the single across platforms including TikTok, Spotify, and even reached #13 on the iTunes Country Chart.
My thoughts on the single’s recent video inception? It’s everything country music should embody right now. Cooke wrote the song after losing a close friend to cancer. She then asked fans to send in photos of those who they lost in remembrance. The result? One of the few country music videos worth watching right now. It’s the best balance between a music video and a lyric video. The fan-submitted photos add an emotional touch without becoming too heavy. Cooke’s voice itself is equally as stunning. She grew up between both California and Florida and you can absolutely hear it in her voice. I also noticed aspects of mainstream country in her voice with aspects similar to those of Carly Pearce, Lauren Alaina, and Abby Anderson. Some singers sing with their vocal chords. Some sing with their hearts. And Cooke clearly falls into the second category.
Cooke spoke to me, exclusively at Stars and Guitars, saying “I wrote this song from a really personal place about my friend, Adam, but seeing how many people it touches gives it an entirely new meaning. I’m just really honored to get to share people’s stories through this video.”
Pairing tastefully touching songwriting with creative video takes and pure emotion makes this video a winner for me. How far will it go? We will wait and see. In the meantime, Cooke will surely continue to reach people’s hearts with “Jealous of the Sky.”
