Women had a strong showing in this year’s CMA Awards nominations, as Miranda Lambert led the pack with a record-breaking seven nods. Maren Morris came away with five nominations, Carly Pearce earned four and Ashley McBryde accumulated three. Other leaders included Luke Combs with six nominations, Dan + Shay with four and first-time nominee Justin Bieber scored three nods for his collaboration with Dan + Shay ‘10,000 Hours’.
The other big accomplishment for female artists in this year’s nominations is that for the first time since 1979, two solo female artists, Lambert and Carrie Underwood, were included on the short list for Entertainer of the Year. Several times from 1999 to 2010 there were two nominees of a solo female and a duo or group that contained a female. Not since Crystal Gayle and Barbara Mandrell has there been two solo females in the same year though. Eric Church, Keith Urban and Combs round out the contenders for this year’s top prize.
