Carrie Underwood gave us a preview of her upcoming Christmas album by releasing a brand-new song titled ‘Let There Be Peace’ on Friday. The song starts off slowly with a simple piano and a Gospel choir, before switching gears to a more upbeat R&B/Gospel sound. Save for one or two lines that mention Christmas, it isn’t an overtly Christmas song and you can get away with playing it in September without people groaning that it’s too early. Two factors had a strong influence on this song, her faith and her love for the late George Michael. Underwood has never shied away from the presence of Jesus in her life and her fans have always embraced that. She has also said that George Michael has been one of her biggest inspirations and it has never been more apparent than on this song. There was a very ‘Freedom ‘90’ vibe to this song in both message and production, but it was an homage rather than a direct copy. This song can easily make its way into many Christmas and non-Christmas playlists and I would love to see her perform this live just to see what she does with it.
