Rascal Flatts returned with new music on Friday, in the form of a new EP titled ‘How They Remember You’. It seems like this release was supposed to serve in conjunction with their now-scrapped 2020 Farewell Tour. In the meantime, fans of the trio can enjoy six new songs, plus a cover of the late Kenny Rogers’ ‘Through the Years’.
Standout tracks include previously released track ‘Quick, Fast, In a Hurry’ featuring newcomer Rachel Wammack, and the perfect for summer party song ‘Sip Away’. The former’s vocal harmonies are fantastic. Even though Wammack doesn’t get a verse to herself, she definitely made her mark on this song and listeners should be excited for her upcoming debut album. ‘Sip Away’ fires on all cylinders, from vocals to production to story. I have a feeling it could join the ranks of ‘Summer Nights’ and ‘Life is a Highway’ as one of their best up-tempo songs at some point.
It wouldn’t be a Rascal Flatts album without a little bit of schmaltz. Title track ‘How They Remember You’ is on brand with previous songs by the trio that try to uplift and inspire, but this one just doesn’t hit the mark. The lyrics are very predictable, the production is not very empowering, and it seems kind of a waste to name an EP after one of its weakest songs.
Overall, this EP is not their best work, but it’s also not their worst. It contains some instantly downloadable songs that should absolutely be included on their setlist once they can finally begin that farewell tour. To listen to ‘How They Remember You’, click here.
