Tenille Townes released her long-awaited debut album ‘The Lemonade Stand’ Friday. The Canadian import is hoping to make a splash in the U.S. with this collection of 12 songs that act as a continuation of her ‘Road to The Lemonade Stand’ EP she released in February. Overall, this album was mostly fun and upbeat, but never shied away from important topics like heaven, poverty, equality, and love.
Previous Canadian #1 songs ‘Somebody’s Daughter’ and ‘Jersey on the Wall (I’m Just Asking)’ as well as new track ‘When I Meet My Maker’ are certainly the most thought-provoking songs on the album. The latter two contain serious conversations about the afterlife and what might happen after you die. Unsurprisingly, they are some of the only ballads on this album. ‘Somebody’s Daughter’ is an objective look at the life of a girl on the street, who ultimately has people that care about her just like everyone else. Lack of judgment was also a theme on this album. Aside from the previous song, ‘Come As You Are’ is basically a party song that says that all are welcome no matter what kind of lives they lead.
Sonically, a majority of these songs are upbeat and can easily be imagined as concert songs. A good portion are also love songs, but she doesn’t come off as desperate for love. ‘Holding Out For the One’ shows she is an independent woman who knows what she wants and won’t settle for less. As soon as it seems like she’s veering into obsessing over a man, her duet partner Keelan Donovan on ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ comes in and shows that it’s an equal love affair.
